History of Diving Museum

Entertaining for both kids and adults, this museum chronicles the story of underwater exploration over the past 4,000 years. The first county seat for Dade County back in 1836, Indian Key was home to salvors who recovered lucrative cargo from shipwrecked vessels in the Florida Keys. Accessible by boat only, visitors can swim, sunbathe, and hike once they arrive. A unique piece of maritime history, Indian Key transports guests back in time to the 1800s.

Once common on most of the Upper Keys, the virgin tropical hardwood hammock on this island is now a rarity. The park’s visitor center was the home of chemist William J. Matheson, constructed in 1919 as an escape from Miami. Ranger-guided tours are given twice daily; island is only accessible via tour boat.

Hurricane Memorial

Located just outside the entrance to Cheeca Lodge, the Hurricane Memorial was erected in 1937 to commemorate the lives lost in the Labor Day hurricane of 1935. The storm took over 400 lives, many of whom were WWI veterans. A somber and impressive memorial, the monument is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
